When I was in high school I had a flash of insight. On a calm evening after a period of difficulty and painful growth, I sat on the porch swing of our home in East Orange, New Jersey. Rocking back and forth, protected by the mass of green bushes before me, I could see out, but no one could see me. Suddenly I was struck by a revelation - “everything is alive”. Everything in the world - myself, the swing, the bushes, rivers and streams, plants and animals, all the way to the stars – was connected, full of energy, awareness, and spirit. I have never again had such a moment. My photography has been an effort to capture moments that convey my brief insight of profound interconnection, my means of access to things I can’t define.
I’ve lived in Massachusetts since 1974, close to Walden Pond. There is something in the air in New England that resonates with this same spirit. As a a committed Jew, I search for God’s presence in the world and in my life. I find it best in nature and through photography.
In this portfolio I bring together images taken over more the years where I felt something undefinable. I find it in sacred places where people have felt a sense of spirit or God in the landscape, when special light transforms an ordinary place, when I see the weight of millions of years of geologic time in the rocks, and when I can feel the beauty and conciousness of an animal. I want to share these moments with you.
